COUNTRY  &  AREA  FLAGS

The game thus opposes countries of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and some of their allies against several Warsaw Pact (WAPA) countries while involving neutral countries regrouped in a Neutral Coalition (NECO) of their own and several other nations initially non-aligned (NONA) who will realign themselves in the course of the game.  Flags for these are shown below and used thorough the notes

ADDITIONAL  NOTES

The Belgian Flag
Belgium is a funny country in many ways.  For instance, our Constitution of 17 February 1831 is crystal clear (the author of these pages is Belgian...)  « La Nation belge adopte les couleurs rouge, jaune et noire, et pour armes du Royaume le Lion Belgique avec la légende : L'UNION FAIT LA FORCE. » which could be translated as « The Belgian Nation adopts the red, yellow and black colors and the Belgian Leo as arms with the motto : UNITY IS STRENGTH. »  There seems to be a consensus among historians that this actually describes horizontal colors starting from the top.  Now, there is a decree of 23 January 1831 by the Provisional Government specifying that the colors will be placed vertically but as our Constitution is posterior to this decree, in effect the Belgian flag as usually known is ... non constitutional.  Which isn't good enough a reason to change our habits....

The question of the Congolese flag in 1963-1967
Besides Senegal, South Africa and perhaps Rhodesia, African countries are not referred to in AAC.  Having said that, the above list of flags being prepared to cater for all contingencies the former Belgian colony of Congo saw its flag evolve with time.  Here is a summary of the variations involved with the flag of "Congo-Kinshasa" (not to be confused with the "Congo-Brazzaville" shown for reference).

The Question of the German Flag
From 1945 till 1990 when the two parts were reunited, Germany was split into East (German Democratic Republic) and West (Federal Republic of Germany), and this situation is translated into the flags used in Atlantic Air Combat™.  Then, as AAC™ refers to several aircraft designs dating from WWII and used or re-manufactured after the war, a different flag will show to identify this specificificity (the fictional DN or DNS codes will be used for that period).

The Hungarian Flag
To keep things simple, the same flag was used from 1848 till 1949, although without a crown in the coat of arms as from 1946.  In 1949, a Communist star replaced the traditional coat of arms but was removed after the 1956 revolution.

The Question of the Rhodesian Flag
Whether or not the Rhodesian Air Force will be part of the AAC™ fantasy is yet to be determined - perhaps as a backup supply of airframes (Spitfires, Vampires, Hunters).  If so, it will be from a Cold War era aeronautical point of view rather than from a political one as the regime of the time is not endorsed here, nor any other for that matter.  As this particular geographical area went through several changes during the AAC™ time frame, here is a brief summary illustrating how the flag was chosen to (potentially) represent this set of aircrafts :

The Flag of the United Arab Emirates (UAE)
Countries bordering the Indian Ocean are not part of AAC™ with at least two exceptions : Australia and India as their Naval Air Arms assets are artificially brought into play.  However, it is sometimes being referred to other countries in background pages, among them the United Arab Emirates.  The UAE however is a federation of seven Emirates established on December 2, 1971.  Each of the seven Emirates within the Federation has its own flag, except Fujairah which uses the federal flag as state flag.  None of these sub-national flags will be found in the background pages, but the sake of being accurate, here is a summary of the flags involved :
