Introduction
The Boeing B-52 Stratofortress was (and remains !) a major design in the USAF inventory, and will inspire one among various NATO heavy bombers within AAC.   In real life this particular aircraft has been produced in several variants which ALL were available by 1963.  Thus, for AAC purposes, any variant is possible.   Added to this table are the number of crew members, their position and whether they are facing forward
or back

Crew
Worth noting : all six crew members (eight when using the multitask container located in the bomb bay) are equipped with ejections seats except the gunner when located on the gunner deck at the tail of the aircraft.  So, for AAC purposes, the egress sequence is a mixed one (bail out + eject)

Boeing B-52 Variants

Differences between these variants are ... varied but for AAC purposes several have been isolated in order to define what the AAC B-52 should be able to do do:
B-52B

This is the first production variant which was delivered either as a B52B bomber or a RB52B reconnaissance aircraft with this particular function located in a special photo-reconnaissance container taking place in the bomb bay.   Worth noting, 34 airframes (18xRB52B and 16 B52B) out of the 50 produced were equipped with a different tail gun arrangement containing two M24A1 20mm guns instead of the classical .50cal quartet (and a different fire control system).   In the table below this particular tail gun arrangement is shown to all "B" airframes which is thus not accurate, albeit deliberately.  Also, one of these model had been adapted to carry the X-15 experimental aircraft.

B-52C

This second production batch is essentially similar with to the RB-52B as all C variants are able to carry the photo-reconnaissance (actually multi-task) container.   Worth noting, all C variants were later retrofitted with the capacity to launch the AGM28 Hound Dog stand off missile

B-52D
The bomb load of this particular version refers to the late 1965 "Big Belly" programme which aimed at increasing the amount of conventional bombs being carried, both internally and externally.

B-52F

This variant was actually the first one to use the (retrofitted) AGM-28 pylon to carry conventional bombs.

B-52G/H
Enhanced internal conventional bomb load doens't apply to the G and H models, but external carrying capacity does, with the addition of the AGM-28 Hound Dog stand off missile for which the "H" was designed.  This addition to the B-52 arsenal has been retrofitted to most of the previous variants, in particular all "C" and "F" models.

B-52J (AAC)
For AAC purposes, we may either pick several variants or thus create a cheat "upgrade" of one combining the following key items

B52A

- capacity to carry the X15 experimental aircraft, for the intermediary X15 "prize" mission (B52B was similarly modified into NB52B)

B52B

- twin 20mm tail gun (better defensive range but no doubt this choice would trigger endless comment)
- capacity to handle the recce pod

B52C

- classical quartet of .50 cal tail gun (shorter defensive range but highter combined rate of fire - a classic set up for the fans)
- capacity to handle the recce pod
- capacity to handle the AGM-28 Hound Dog stand off missile (actually a B52G/H capacity retrofited to that particular model)

B52D

- increased conventional bomb carrying capacity for the intended carpet bombing mission(s) - bombs or mines

B52E

B52F

- more powerful engines (but we may as well tweak the AI to match the desired performances)

B52G

- same as above + increased fuel + capacity to carry the AGM28 Hound Dog stand off missile (earlier variants retrofitted)
- simplified evacuation procedure : ejection only instead of a combined "bail out + ejection" applicable to B through F models

B52H

- even more engine power + AGM28 + 20mm tail gun (but with only 18sec of firing time compared to the 30sec of B-->G)
- same remark about ejection procedure

Thus, and to cater for legal constraints (re: name change : "Stratobomber"), we should create a fantasy B52J version combining those key elements (for actual bomb loads, see appropriate notes).  In short : a retrofit of the (R)B-52B variant enabling them

-

to launch the AGM28 stand off missiles (a revised AAC type - see further below)

-

to carry the larger 3000 USgal external fuel tanks

-

to carry an increased internal amount of conventional bombs, bringing it to the "Big Belly" standards of the "D" variant and beyond

-

to carry a revised maximum load of 12000lb (instead of 10000lb) on the inner pylon

-

to carry bombs in the stead of fuels tanks on the external wing position.  In the tables, is is referred to as "Bombs/3"

-

-

theoretical maximum load  : 2 18000lbs, referring here to some collected fuel load data rather than AAC's fuel weight standards

-

-

practical maximum load : 2 12000lbs, like the inner pylons

Bomb Load Options
As far as the suggested B52J is concerned, various bomb load options are explored herebelow.  This study calls for the following remarks :

Some of these are in excess of the theoretical (real life) 60,000 lbs maximum playload referred to before and in excess of the alleged maximum inner pylons load of 210,000lbs.  These either need to be removed (define internal, external and global weight limitations) or considered as a "cheat" associated with a (very !) early aerial refueling - a matter to be refined later.

Several (many ?..) of the options examined might fail to have any practical purpose, besides having gamers getting addicted to bombload setups...  In any event, the gamer should be allowed/restricted to define :

1. the internal bomb bay load
(one weapon type at a time only)
2. the (inner) external pylon load
(one weapon type at a time only)
3. the outer (if retained) external pylon load
(one weapon type at a time only)

each wing pylons is supposedly composed as follows (Illustration) :

The internal bomb load options are illustrated, as well as the external ones

The table below do not show mixed loads (eg: bombs and mines), but such mixed load are naturally possible.  Based on the seven groups of weapons, the weapons load could mix conventional bombs, Fuel Air Explosives, mines, T10-T14 Very Heavy Demolition Bombs, mines, depth charges and stand off missiles as follows, using only one weapon type (eg: Mk82 bomb) per location (ie: bomb bay, inner pylon, and outer pylon).  Some weapons however are only carried in a single position - there are marked with a red asterisk  (*).  Several of these mix loads have little relevance and some weapons association with the B-52 totally fictional (re: depth charges, torpedoes), but lets gamers decide for themselves...

Very Heavy Demolition Bombs

This part is arguable as it seemed from various reading that only the B-36 could handle them.  I guess many will question the compatibility of these particular weapons with the B-52.  Having said that, known data are shown herebelow.  Worth noting are the 5 abreast/6 atop Mk82 arrangement inside the "D-Big Belly" variant retained for dimensional comparison purposes.  Considering some allowance has to be given for braces between bombs rows/columns (to be added on top of the total dimensions shown), it is assumed within AAC that, if necessitated by events, it could have been possible.   So, while a clear departure from observed reality, these "cheat" weapons are considered as plausible and added to the B-52J inventory.

Notes regarding the AGM-28 Hound Dog Stand-Off Missile      AGM-28C Illustration      AGM-28D ata and Illustration
Without entering into unnecessary details, the AGM28 was a nuclear tipped missile which could be fired 1200km away from its target (or 640km for a low altitude missile flight path).  While the AAC nuclear ban initially ruled that weapon out, it being rather unique in the Western arsenal lead to some re-thinking.  Considering the weight of the nuclear warhead (790kg), the same mass of high explosive added to the kinetics of a 4 tons missile impacting at Mach 2 makes it an interresting tool.  This weapon should therefore be added to the B52 inventory.   The question of the volume occupied by 790kg of HE is totally dispensed with, this should be handled as a de facto detail.  Also, this fantasy AGM-28D is supposedly equipped with a semi-active radar enabling it to be used for anti-shipping purposes.

Back to historical notes : while earmarked for the G and H models, earlier variants were retrofitted with the capacity to fire this particular missile.  It is understood that most where, but all of the "C" model :

Notes regarding the X-15 Suborbital Test Vehicle      X-15 Notes      X-15A2 Illustration      S-15A3 Illustration.
A specially modified B-52 is also the exclusive launch platform for the X-15 test vehicule.   Similarly, but this is not related to the B-52, a Soviet heavy bomber will also be suitably modified to become the launch platform of a similar aircraft.
