FÅKER 367  ASTROTANKER KC-97M
FÅKER 367  ASTROFREIGHTER  C-97M
FÅKER 377  ASTROCRUISER

The story which didn't happen ... outside Atlantic Air Combat

Introduction

The Astrotanker is one among several refueling tankers you may refuel from.   While the in-flight refueling function is only available from a "taker" point of view, the aircraft type is nevertheless available in three formats :

1.

The Fåker 367 KC-97M Astrotanker   This type is mimicking the Boeing 367 KC-97G, buth with the 700 US gallons external tanks being replaced with refueling pods making the aircraft a dual "probe & drogue" and "flying boom" tanker.  The Astrotanker will be available to the US and Spanish Air Forces (standing for the KC-97L actually flown by the Spanish) and to other nations like Sweden, South Africa, etc in order to sustain the universally available in-flight refueling function among NATO and non Warsaw Pact countries.

2.

The Fåker 367 C97M Stratofreighter   This variant stands for the C-97G military transport aircraft.   While not a major type in the USAF, it is included in the list of available aircrafts to perform military transport/relief missions.  It will be present in the game in the form of the C-97M, a conversion from the KC-97M Astrotanker

3.

The Fåker 377 Astrocruiser   In its own time, the Boeing 377 Stratocruiser offered unequalled lavish comfort and its AAC variant is exceptionnally illustrated in details.   This airliner is thus available for transit from one area of the game to the other, and for the benefit of flight simulation amateurs.

The real life Boeing 377 and the fantasy Fåker 377 variant

So, let's start with the more futile variant of this aircraft.   While only 56 aircrafts were manufactured in the late 40s and early 50s, several Boeing Stratocruiser variants may be identified.   Variations are minor and essentially about passengers accommodations layout, engine propeller and ... the shape of windows.  For the purpose of the game, a supposedly reverse engineered Fåker 377 Astrocruiser has been imagined for the in-game Atlantic Expedite Airways (Æ), and this fantasy variant compares to the Boeing ones as follows (see also full data table further below)

The fantasy Atlantic Expedite Airways (Æ) Astrocruiser layout is thus very close to the United Airlines version, with a hint of BOAC and a little more amenities.  The length of the aircraft has been stretched by 80 inches, with a 40" plug before the wing (actually behind the cockpit) and a 40" plug after the wing.

Various drawings of the Fåker 377.14.36 have been prepared to offer an in-depth illustration of this particular aircraft - click o
n the link when present.  Some of these drawings also show Pan Amarican Boeing 377.10.26 variant.  While not available as such in the game, you are given tools to modify AAC aircrafts and rename them to your liking.

Military Variants

The same aircraft is thus presented in its two military iterations : the C97M transport aircraft and more importantly the KC97M aerial tanker, with the latter being literally a stretched re-engined KC97G with the two underwing pylons accommodating refueling pods rather than auxiliary fuel tanks.   To boost the type performances, the standard 3250hp engines of both the Boeing KC-97G and KC-97L variants have been replaced with a much more powerful variant, the AAC R4370-51-VDT, inspired by the R4360-51-VDT initially intended for the B-54 Ultrafortress bomber.   Game wise, the playload is not really relevant.  As far as the C97M is concerned, and contrary to their "real life" equivalent, the clamshell doors may open in flight, allowing for loads to be parachuted at destination.

The table below is only a brief summary of the main variants of the orginal C-97/KC-97 variants; it is not intened to be comprehensive :

Technical Data - Summary
For the KC-97M variant,  both the "probe & drogue" and "flying boom" refueling systems are thus available.  The basic amount of fuel is based on the Super Stratocruiser, an improvement brought to some PAA and BOAC aircrafts in the 1950s where an additional 360 US gallons was added in outer wings cells.  Data shown for Boeing aircrafts are for comparison and information purposes only and are hopefully correct.   Data for the Fåker variants is ... fictional..

If you modify a variant of this set of AAC aircrafts, please note that in those past days, jet engines were indifferently burning jet fuel or avgas.  So, for a gamer-made KC-97L, fuel shall be drawn from all fuel tanks to either feed the piston or the jet engines.

In-flight Refueling Mode

In-flight refueling is not a playable mission in the "giver" mode.   If you fly one of the Fåker 367/377 aircrafts, especially in the flight simulation mode, your range will be restricted by the amount of fuel available on board.  So, you may fly around with a tanker aircraft, replacing the refueling pods with extra fuel tanks and use up all the on board fuel for hours if you so fancy !

When taking fuel from an in-flight refueling aircraft, you the gamer, will receive whatever type of fuel the aircraft you fly is supposed to burn, topping both your main and auxiliary tanks (unless jettisioned prior reaching the refueling tanker).  There are thus no quantity limitation on the part of the tanker you will refuel from.
