Land-based anti-aircraft weapons

Sea-based anti-aircraft weapons

Depending on aircraft type, weapons are carried internally and/or externally under wing and/or fuselage pylons with the number of weapons stations varying from one aircraft to the other.   To see the various weapons associated with a particular aircraft see :

Ammunitions Illustrated

Most combat aircrafts of the time were equipped with internal guns, even if a trend blossomed to remove them from fighters in the 1960s.   Size and caliber vary naturally but to make it short, they fall into one of the following categories - the same differenciation will apply to podded guns

 Machine guns Light .30 cal

Essentially restricted to light training aircraft

The Browning 1919 .30cal gun might stand for other direct equivalent (Browning .303, etc.).  To avoid confusion with another weapon, it will here be designated the ANM1.

Rate of fire is however specific to each weapon

Effective range is arbitrarily set as 1000 metres for all light machine guns

 Machine guns Heavy .50 cal

The USAF sticked a long time to their favourite guns, eitheir in their ANM2 or ANM3 iterations

While classified as a machine gun, the shell actually contains a small (incendiary) burst charge.  The 13.2mm iteration of the same gun contains a fictional explosive charge, actually making it an autocannon

The Soviet 14.5mm gun never had an aircraft application, at least not in real life

Effective range is arbitrarily set as 2000 metres for all heavy machine guns

 Autocannons Light 20-30 mm

Various US guns were using the 20mm caliber with different performances

the USN M11 20mm gun only had a podded application

The Warsaw pact had adopted their own 23mm caliber

With the exception of more ancient types, the 30mm caliber had by then adopted in Western Europe

Effective range is arbitrarily set as 3000 metres for all autocannons

 Autocannons Medium 37 mm

Various WW2 vintage aircraft were equipped with 37mm gun

The 37mm calibre was a major type for several Soviet aircrafts

    57 mm

Only applies to a few types

GUN FAMILIES

Some of these guns are the result of the evolution of a common design.   While the HS.404 gun itself may be sourced to an Oerlikon design here are simplfied family trees for two major families of aircraft guns :

The Browning Machine Gun

The .50cal gun is somewhat different in the sense its story started much ealier, in 1919 in the shape of a .30cal machine gun which not only gave birth to a couple of variants but also to its larger counter part, the M2HB and even more variants culminating with the Japanese 20mm Ho-5..  Listing them all would be beyond the scope of these notes but here are a few, including Atlantic Air Combat™ fakes.  Only a couple of AAC™ aircraft/SPAAG/NAVAG applications are mentioned and the designations used in the "applications" part of the table are those referred to in the game :

The M61 Gatling Gun

If the gun is now developped in "low" rate of fire iterations, the beauty of the design is to potentially offer very high rate of fire.  It should be present aboard various AAC™ aircraft standing for real designs (shown in bold in this table), but also as anti-aircraft weapons, either AA guns, SPAAGs or aboard ships.

MACHINE GUNS WARHEADS

All AAC™ gun/autocannon ammunitions allegedly contains a given amount of explosive/incendiary material and all are "armor piercing".  In other words these fantasy ammunitions are multipurpose in order to address any target, be it in the air, on the ground or afloat.  Naturally, the lighter the projectile, the lighter the damaged inflicted.  If explosive ammunitions are common from 20mm onward, explosive bullets have seldom be produced.  Three cheat bullets are involved in Atlantic Air Combat™ :

 .30 call ammunition [7.50ื55, 7.62ื51, 7.70ื56, 7.92ื57, etc.]

From the French 7.50ื54 up to the Swedish 8.00ื63, all light machine guns fire a 11 grammes bullet containing a 1 gramme explosive/incendiary filling.  The idea of this cheat bullet is based on the Japanese explosive ammunition of WWII.

 .50 call ammunition [12.7ื81, 12.7ื99]

The US .50 cal ammunition is now very well known.  If some rounds are of the incendiary type, theoretically none contained explosive material.  However, for the purpose of Atlantic Air combat™, the standard .50 cal projectile contains 2 grammes of RDX.  Having said that, the US 12.7ื99 BMG isn't the only .50cal ammunition (more on this subject on Italian 12.7mm background page):
12.7ื 81 : 4 grammes (Italy) fired by the "SAFA" present of a couple of aircaft
12.7x108 : 5 grammes (USSR ) fired by the "BRZK", "BRZS" and "A127" present on several Soviet inspired aircraft.

 .52 call ammunition [13.2ื96, 13.2ื99]

The ubiquitous Browning HMG design has been associated with a different ammunition of French origin, the 13.2x99.  Apparently initiated by the Belgian Fabrique Nationale in the 1930s, this association lead to the Imperial Japanese Navy 13.2x96 (unlikely to be referred to in the game)  and more importantly, at least from an AAC™ perspective, to the Swedish M39/M44 HMG manufactured by Bofors.  In Atlantic Air Combat™, this lead to imagine an extra powerful ammunition allegdly containing a much more lethal 8 grammes of RDX, turning the associated weapons below into auto-cannons :
AK39 standing for the  750 rpm Swedish Bofors m39A (the rechambered 12.7ื99 m39B is excluded from AAC™)
AK44 standing for the  900 rpm Swedish Bofors m44A (the rechambered 12.7ื99 m45A is excluded from AAC™)
AK48 standing for a   1200 rpm Swedish Bofors fantasy iteration of the fast firing US AN/M3
AN48 standing for a   1200 rpm Swedish Bofors fantasy iteration of the fast firing US AN/M3 (here, an allegedly water cooled naval AA artillery)

MEASUREMENTS / UNITS

A mix of metric and imperial values are still shown on AAC for the moment.  To make it a little easier :

kg : kilogramme m : metre feet : feet : 1' (0.3048 m) rpm : round per minute gr : grain (unused @ AAC™)
lb : pound     (0.4536 kg) mm : milimetre (0.001 m) in : inch : 1" (0.0254 m) rpg : rounds per gun 100 gr : 6.4799 grammes
g : gramme (0.0010 kg) m/s : metre/second 01'00" : 1 feet 0 inch

REMERCIEMENTS

Information have been gathered from various sources to prepare these pages but a special thanks goes to :

 http://www.quarryhs.co.uk for their tables, among them 8-19mm >> 20mm >> 21-29mm >> 30mm >> 31-37mm
 http://russianammo.org, for their summaries, among them :  >> 12-15mm >> 20-25mm >> 30mm >> 37-40mm >> 45-57mm

Any remarks, hopefully constructive, are naturally welcome.  The careful reader will differenciate what are supposedly historical data (eg: the weight of the ShKAS gun noted as 11kgs) and speculative/fictional data (eg: the firing range for the same weapon noted as 1000 meters).   Even then, any remarks or suggestions regarding this part are also welcome.   Atlantic Air Combat email : pierre.deveaux@laposte.net.

 Gun  Pod  Weight  Breakdown Index

The weight of faked gun pods is based on existing items.  Reasonably documented data in blue  -  faked data in red.
The AAC ammo standard weights (50cal = 115 gr / 0.252 lb  -  13.2mm : 118 gr / 0.260 lb) are not used here as Douglas data provides for it.
Douglas data states 285 rpg as the standard fit and 340 rpg as the maximum ammo capacity.  The German WWII WB81A is insufficiently documented
