Depending on aircraft type, weapons are carried internally and/or externally under wing and/or fuselage pylons with the number of weapons stations varying from one aircraft to the other.   To see the various weapons associated with a particular aircraft see :

Guns - Introduction

This chapter is divided into three sections - See also additional Notes
Guns
Gun Pods
Gun Turrets

Most combat aircrafts of the time were equipped with internal guns, even if a trend blossomed to remove them from fighters in the 1960s.   Size and caliber vary naturally but to makeit short, they fall into one of the following categories - the same differenciation will apply to podded guns

 Machine guns small caliber

.30 cal/  7.

62 mm

Essentially restricted to light training aircraft

The Browning 1919 .30cal gun stands for other direct equivalent (Vickers .303, Browning 7.7mm guns).  To avoid confusion with another weapon, it will here be called the ANM1.  To simplify things a little, the same balistic (range) will apply to all 7.62mm gun

Rate of fire is however specific to each weapon (eg: the Soviet ShKas 7.62mm gun)

Effective range is arbitrarily set as 1000 metres

 Machine guns large caliber

.50 cal/12.

70 mm

The US Air Force sticked a long time to their favourite guns, eitheir in their ANM2 or ANM3 iterations

While classified as a machine gun, the shell actually contains a small (incendiary) burst charge

The Soviet 14.5mm gun never had an aircraft application, at least not in real life

Effective range is arbitrarily set as 2000 metres

 Autocannons small caliber

20-30

  mm

Various US guns were using the 20mm caliber with different performances

With the exception of more ancient types, the Western Europeans had by then adopted the 30mm caliber

The Warsaw pact had adopted their own 23mm caliber

the USN M11 20mm gun only had a podded application

Effective range is arbitrarily set as 3000 metres for all autocannons

 Autocannons medium caliber

37

  mm

Various WW2 aircraft were equipped with such a gun

A major gun type for several Soviet aircrafts

 Autocannons large caliber

57

  mm

Only applies to a single Swedish type, if if will be retained in AAC

Some of these guns actually are the result of the evolution of a common desigh.   While the HS.404 gun itself may be sourced to an Oerlikon design here are a simplfied family tree for two major families of aircraft guns :

Any remarks, hopefully constructive, are naturally welcome.  The careful reader will differenciate what are supposedly historical data (eg: the weight of the ShKAS gun noted as 11kgs) and speculative/fictional data (eg: the firing range for the same weapon noted as 1000 meters).   Even then, any remarks or suggestions regarding this part are also welcome.   Atlantic Air Combat email : pierre.deveaux@laposte.net.

Measurements/Units : a mix of metric and imperial values are used on AAC.  In the tables below, measurements are essentially metrics :
kg : kilogramme m : metre feet : feet : 1' (0.3048 m) gr : the grain not used on AAC
lb : pound (0.454 kg) mm : milimetre (0.001 m) in : inch : 1" (25.4 mm) 100 gr = 6.4799 grammes
g : gramme (0.001 kg) m/s : metre/second >> : 1'00" = 1 feet 0 inch rpm : round per minute
rpg : rounds per gun

Warheads: all bullets (or cannon shells) are equipped with a given ammount of explosive, either called by a name or another in the Warhead type column.   In practice in AAC the amount of "explosive" is expressed in grammes

Guns Turrets - 1/3
The subject is much less an oddity than it sounds, as bombers were still equipped with a tail gun in the 1960s.   Besides, with a few WWII era aircrafts being included in the game, this item is thus examined like any others, even if it won't be operated by the player but by the AI on his behalf.  Without being exhaustive, here is a short list of gun turrets and the aircraft they were associated with.   When appropriate, forward firing guns (eg: Il-28 Beagle) are also mentioned "pour mémoire".  Aircrafts scheduled for AAC are highlighted.  Other aircrafts are "under consideration"...

Guns Turrets - 3/3
Although of limited interest, as it only refer to USN equipment : "The postwar U.S. Navy Bureau of Aeronautics (BuAer) assigned "AERO" designations to many different types of equipment, that were used on postwar US Navy aircraft. More specifically, "AERO" designations were assigned to aircraft ordnance equipment and accessories, including tow targets, gunsights, bombsights, target carriers, gun chargers, turrets, bomb shackles, bomb and torpedo racks, launchers and ejectors, bomb trailers and skids, and bomb and torpedo hoists. The following table lists the AERO numbers assigned to airborne defensive fire control systems."
