AIRCRAFT CARRIERS and AIRCRAFT COMPLEMENT

V2

1. Introduction
Aircraft carriers are an essential tool in the game.  While in real life the US carriers have spoiled the image of what these ships are really meant for, within the game, carriers will used for a wider range of missions:

air defense of the fleet
antishipping warfare
antisubmarine warfare

search and rescue
reconnaissance
attack on land based targets

The period of time chosen for the game (1963-1967) has been identified for various reasons pertaining to the types of aircrafts available but one of the key motives is that during this period, there was a maximum of aircraft carriers used by a wide variety of nations.  While carriers are naturally associated with the USA, UK and France, during the mid sixties Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, India, the Netherlands and later Spain were also operating this type of ships

Still, this wasn't enough to make the game interresting...   In order to make the game a bit more fun to play with, several cheats have been incorporated:

Providing USSR with conventional aircraft carriers
In 1954, Secretary General Krutchev of the USSR rejected "Project 85" which intentend to provide the USSR with Essex-type carriers.   Well, the game is reverting this decision and the USSR is thus provided with half a dozen of these P85 carriers, plus a few more with enhanced blue water capacities

The air componant has been chosen in accordance with what is known about Soviet intentions of the time : a navalized version of the MiG 17, here in its most sophisticated variant)

The uquibitous MiG15-UTI has been imagined in a navalized format for pilot training and familiarization, again in its most sophisticated iteration

Because of its supersonic performances and twin engine format, it has been considered conceivable that the MiG19 could have beneficated from the same navalization programme

Although not consistent with the time frame, the MiG19/SM12-PM (which in real life gave birth to the MiG21) has been retained as a fantasy aircraft again based on the twin engine equipment of the plane

Providing more non-aligned countries with aircraft carriers
Among non-NATO Nations, some had equiped themselves with indeed quite serious weaponery, even developping their own aircraft industry.  Maybe some of these countries were considered as allies to NATO, but were they really ?

For the benefit of the game, it has been imagined that Sweden and South Africa took advantage of UK getting rid of their Colossus carriers, had them modernized and acquired aircrafts relinquished by the the FAA.

For instance, allocating the Supermarine Attacker ( with the Ekco radar pod) to Sweden allowed the type to be incorporated into the game.

So, let's imagine that R64 HMS THESEUS, R62 HMS GLORY, R68 HMS OCEAN, reached their fantasy customers instead of ending infamously..

Providing real air combat componants to aircraft carriers otherwise dedicated to antisubmarine warfare
In real life, both Spain and Brazil had acquired carriers essentially for antisubmarine warfare, ressorting to
helicopters.

Then, the Dedalo could hardly operate modern jets, and the Brazilian Navy had to make do with a polictical decision removing fixed winged aircrafts from them.

In the context of AAC, Spanish will bed "offered" two carriers and aircrafts consistent with the actual limitations of their ships.

As regard the Brazilan carrier, AAC will revert the decision removing fixed wing aircrafts from the Navy, and provide aircraft types consistent with the geopolitical balance maintained in this part of the world.
Carrier Classes
Besides United Kingdom and France, who operated specific designs which will be imitated as closely as possible, the game involves three carrier classes :

Essex Class
While the United States already operated larger or even "super carriers" since the mid 1950s (cfr: the Forrestal and Kitty Hawk classes) AAC is exclusively referring to the Essex class carriers.  None were exported.

Orel Class
Somewhat similar to the US Essex class, the P85/Orel class was a project of the Soviet Navy rejected by SG Kroutchev.  It is thus set alive in the game as a unique Soviet class of carriers.  None supposedly exported.

After using carriers borrowed or purchased abroad in the 1940s/50s, France developped their own design the Clemenceau Class.

United Kingdom relentlessly developping their designs, lead them to operate a variet of ship classes - an apparently less streamlined situation.

Colossus/Majestic Class
Whith the Majestic only being a refined version of the Colossus, all ships will be considered as a single design with only minor differences between them.  Widely exported, it is thus present with various navies

These various "cheats" will allow you, the gamer, to go through most events, either from a NATO, USSR or Neutral point of view without being deprived of the fun of operating aircrafts from the middle of the ocean...

Note-1
game types of aircrafts operated by each AC to involve a "progress" in the course of the game (major AC operators only)
in the table below, click on the icon to access illustrations or either on for additional notes
in a couple of cases, Aircraft Carriers operate aircraft from more than a single "operator" - the national flag in front of the list of aircrafts identify them

Note-2
Aircfraft information below is definitely ... temporary - Please Disregard this part for the moment (2012.06.03).   But if you read it....
Mentions in blue  : historical
Mentions in black : hopefully plausible, but just playing with ideas
Mentions in red    : cheat aircrafts, either the type (eg: F6U) or the operator (eg: South Africa) or the carrier/aircraft association (eg: R17 Sidney)
So called "prize aircrafts" is a different matter : these will be "fun" aircrafts to be gained in the course of the game; some may have "outstanding" performances
but the main purpose will be fun, like the possibility to fly the XF5U Pancake or the XFY1 Pogo
