Introduction

The French Navy used various carriers after the second world war, among them the Bearn and Dixmude.  After the war, the Bearn was used as a transport rather than a carrier, and the Dixmude only had a brief operational carreer between 1947 and 1949 before too being used a an aircraft transport till 1960.

From 1963 onward, only the R95 Arromanches together with the new built R98 Clemenceau and R99 Foch were operational.   In addition to these three historical references, the two Independence class carriers will see their operational life artificially lengthened in Atlantic Air Combat™ and the R97 Jeanne D'Arc will have an advance start in life (albeit under a different identification) and a sister ship.  The below table shows real and fictional carriers together with their historical, cheated, and refit time lines.

R93 RESOLUE &  R94 PROMISE

These two carriers are the main sea going helicopter platforms associated with the French Nay in AAC™.  Resolue  name was Jeanne d'Arc  original name before her renaming in 1964.  There are thus two of them in Atlantic Air Combat™, which should allow for ... some attrition.

These French ships will be represented in a resonably faithfull manner, except for their anti-aircraft missile armament : part of the initial design such a launcher was never installed on the real Jeanne d'Arc.  When played against them, these are thus difficult but rewarding targets.

Furthermore, the Resolue  design is twisted into representions of the British Fearless  and the Soviet Moskva  classes of helicopter carriers.

R95 ARROMANCHES

Cheated operational time tine

While mainly used as an helicopter carrier from 1962 onward, the R95 Arromanches did remain available as a training carrier, and she actually participated in an ASW training cruise off the Portuguese coast as late as 1971 (see table below).

In the context of AAC, Arromanches will remain available as an "operational" carrier, together with vintage aircrafts standing for the F4U, TBM and F6F whose service life is artificialy extended along its more ordinary complement of contemporary jet trainers and ASW aircraft standing for the CM175 Zephyr and Br1050 Alize.

Then, with the F8F Bearcat being cheated on the deck of the Brazilian Minas Gerais, and considering the French Armée de l'Air operated the type in Indochina, a design standing for this aircraft is also available off the deck of the Arromanches to the benefit of vintage aircrafts fans.  The same cheat applies to the F6F Hellcat : operated by Uruguayan Air Force/Naval Air Arm till the early sixties and historically operated by the French Navy (1950-1955), the type is thus also represneted on the Arromanche deck.

R96 LA FAYETTE  &  R97 BOIS BELLEAU

Cheated operational time line

As mentioned above the La Fayette  was retired in the first quarter of 1963 (and the Bois Belleau  earlier in 1960), and initially she wasn't scheduled for inclusion in Atlantic Air Combat™.  However, one may assume that with a war on hand, she would not have been retired.  So, it is imagined that neither of the Spanish Dedalo sister ships were, and both are portrayed to act as a secondary platforms for vintage aircraft and helicopters.

R98 CLEMENCEAU  &  R99 FOCH

These two carriers are the main ones associated with the French Nay in AAC™ to operate aircraft designs standing for their original complement.  Their representation is reasonably faithful to the original design.

AIRCRAFT OF THE FRENCH NAVAL AIR ARM

Without going back to the late 1940s, here is a brief summary of the aircraft types operated from French aircraft carriers.  The F8F Bearcat should be taken with humour as the type was only operated by ... the Armée de l'Air (in Indochina).

The below summary thus incorporates cheated references, real and cheated service time lines, and aircraft types which are exclusive to the game engine (not available to players).  Atlantic Air Combat™ aircraft designs differ from real ones under several aspects and all bear specific ingame designations and names.  Some of these deserve an additional note :

F4U5N35 Crosbow

The F4U Corsair is represented by two variants, standing for the F4U-5N (radar equipped night fighter) and the F4U-5P (photo reconnaissance variant)

F6F5N40 Hellbat

The F6F Corsair is represented by two variants, standing for the F6F-5N (radar equipped night fighter) and the F6F-5P (photo reconnaissance variant)

F8F2N10 Fearbat

The F8F Bearcat is represented by two variants, standing for the F8F-2N (radar equipped night fighter) and the F8F-2P (photo reconnaissance variant)

F8U2C25 Coroner

The F8U Crusader is represented by two variants, standing for the F8U-2C (FFAR equipped fighter) and the F8U-1P (photo reconnaissance variant) with the latter not associated with the French Navy

B105ASW Tramontane

The Br1050 Alizé is represented in three variants, one standing for the standard ASW variant, one dedicated to carrier on board delivery and a fake AEW version

TR06N15 Texel The AT-6/SNJ Texan is represented by both a land and a carrier based variant.  In AAC™, the actual French SNJ are thus portrayed by the carrier capable "TR06N15"
GH112N1 Sea Eagle

The French manufactured DH112 Sea Venom was produced by SNCASE in four different variants :
30 Aquilon 201

assembled from parts supplied by De Havilland (5 pre-serie airframes + 25 main production)

25 Aquilon 202 two seat variant entirely produced by SNCASE
40 Aquilon 203 single seat night fighter with an APQ-65 radar
6 Aquilon 204 two seat trainer with the same APQ-65 radar but without cannons

Two operational "flotilles" used the Aquilon : 11F (Karouba, Morocco, 1955-1962), 16F (Hyères, 1955-1964), both seeing operational deployments during the Algerian war for air defence and ground support duties.  The Aquilon however didn't land on a French carrier before March 1960 during the Clemenceau trials and the type was retired in September 1963.

In AAC™ a single design stands for all variants of the Sea Venom, either under British, Australian and French colors.

HH-05 Dragonfly

Two operational "flotilles" used the Aquilon : 11F (Karouba, Morocco, 1955-1962), 16F (Hyères, 1955-1964), both seeing operational deployments during the Algerian war for air defence and ground support duties.  The Aquilon however didn't land on a French carrier before March 1960 during the Clemenceau trials and the type was retired in September 1963.

In AAC™ a single design stands for all variants of the Sea Venom, either under British, Australian and French colors.

The French Navy uses the word "Flotilles" for combat squadrons and "Escadrilles" for non-combat units, with their numbers organized as from 1953 in
blocks of ten :  01F - 09F : onboard ASW  11F - 19F : onboard fighters  21F - 29F : land based ASW  31F - 39F : helicopter units
(with the 3* block only inaugurated in 1956).  Still in 1953, several units were renumbered, leaving several numbers unused and thus available for fantasy

The La Fayette was not scheduled for inclusion in AAC.  However, as it's a sister ship of the Spanish Dedalo, it would be easily done.  Should we do that, it would be a secondary platform for vintage aircrafts, and  for CM175 Zephyr/Br1050 Alize

FRENCH  NAVAL  AIRCRAFT

Without goint back to the late 1940s, here is a brief summary of the aircraft types operated from French aircraft carriers, with the F8F Bearcat only mentioned with humour as the type was only operated (in Indochina) by ... the Armée de l'Air.  The summary thus incorporates (cheated) aircraft.  Besides real and cheated service time lines, the table also identifies those types which are exclusive the the ingame engine (not available to players).

Aircraft Types and Operating Units
As from 1953, the French Navy Combat Squadron (Flottilles) designations works as follows  - this may leave us with a few "flottille" numbers to squeeze cheatted aircrafts into some form of organization
(Source: http://www.postedeschoufs.com/aeronavale/1946_1962/1%20Generalites/generalites.htm)
01F - 09F : onboard ASW
11F - 19F : onboard fighters
21F - 29F : land based ASW
31F - 39F : helicopter squadrons (from 1956)

The French Navy then uses the word "Escadrille" for non combat units like support, transport, etc

Carrier Air Groups
This notion thus refers altogether to the Squadrons (not referred to in this table), the types and quantities of aircrafts operated aboard carriers.  If the data collected is anything to go by, we would have the following CAG for French Navy carriers, covering all essential roles, namely : FF/RF/AT/BB, ASW/SAR, COD, AEW, and PGR with the last two of these being exclusively handled by the AI.

The "AAC" CAGs won't be historically accurate, as some room must be made for COD and AEW aircrafts.

For the R97 Jeanne D'Arc, one type only should be considered at any given time (unless shown otherwise), so the table should read "Type A¹" or "Type B²" with theoretical "peace" and "war" complement.  The same CAG variants may apply to other ships.

More background data

In the list below, AAC aircraft designations are used.   For instance, the French Aeronavale used the JRB-4 and the SNB-5, two versions of the Beech 18 exclusively identified AAC as the C-45H Expeditor (unless a AT-11 Kansan is referred to, but then, it's not a transport aircraft anymore but a ... bomber).  The same discrepency applies to the SNJ Texan : AAC exclusively refers to the carrier capable SNJ5C or its land based equivalent, the AT6 (re: http://www.ffaa.net/menus/menu_unites.htm)

As from 1953, the French Navy Squadron (Flottilles) designations works as follows (re: http://www.postedeschoufs.com/aeronavale/1946_1962/1%20Generalites/generalites.htm)
01F - 09F : onboard ASW
11F - 19F : onboard fighters
21F - 29F : land based ASW
31F - 39F : helicopter squadrons (from 1956)

This leaves us with a few "flottille" numbers to squeeze cheatted aircrafts into some form of organization
