Notes

Depending on the mission profile, the gamer will be offered one or several of the following options:

Flight Solo Might be imposed upon the gamer
Flight Duo Gamer flies along 1 other aircraft
Flight Trio Gamer flies along 2 other aircrafts
Flight Quattro Gamer flies along 3 other aircrafts
When flying in formation the Gamer may choose to be:
Wingman Receiving instructions
Flight Leader Issuing instructions

-

Flying Solo

When flying solo the Gamer may be flying along with other aircrafts but may only issue one request (cover) to other aircrafts.  Other than that and fulfilling the mission, the Gamer is expected to acknowledge & follow instructions received from ATC or AEW controllers (eg: to provide cover for other aircrafts)

Request Cover

: >

When asking for cover, the nearest friendly aircraft available will come in Close-Loose formation and agressively attack any air threat (if out of ammo, the pilot will signal status on RC but will nevertheless engage air threats trying to keep them off the Gamer aircraft) till all perceivable threats have been dealt with or have withdrawn

-

Flying as a Wingman

When flying as a Wingman the Gamer may only issue one request (cover) to other aircrafts but should :
stay close to his Flight Leader
provide cover against air and surface threats
acknowledge+follow instructions received on
  RC by his Flight Leader

Request Cover

When asking for cover, the nearest friendly aircraft available will come in Close-Loose formation and agressively attack any air threat (if out of ammo, the pilot will signal status on RC but will nevertheless engage air threats trying to keep them off the Gamer aircraft) till all perceivable threats have been dealt with or have withdrawn

Flying as a Flight Leader

Thus the choice made prior a flight (or game session) to play as a Flight Leader will switch the Right Arrow key into a Menu Access mode

The Menu is a two-step process :
1) designating the wingman (to receive order)
2) designating the requested action

By default and unless instructed otherwise (by ATC, AEW or Flight Leader's instructions) aircrafts in the flight fly in "Close-Loose" 500.ft formation (see below) and protect the Flight Leader against air threats only.

Different formation are referred to in a two-word naming system whith the following meanings:

CLOSE action reducing distance between aircrafts
SPREAD action increasing distance between aircrafts
- - -
AFAR distance = 6000 ft
WIDE distance = 1000 fr
LOOSE distance =   500 ft - DEFAULT

Choosing the Wingman option will automatically switch the game to the Action Menu.  Using the Triangle/Cancel key at that moment will just close the Wingmen Menu without any instructions being enacted.

2.00 - Defining the Action

 Automatic

Except for the "Attack" mode, the Action Menu is a single click device allowing swift action insturctions to be despatched

The "Attack" instructions however is a multi-level device allowing the Gamer to fine tune the action required.  The further one goes, the finer the details of the action.  Then, one doens't need to get into refined details to obtain a result with a couple of clicks (Attack+Mode) being sufficient to trigger action

Once the action has been defined (cursor on an action instruction for a duration of 2 sec, the Menu automatically switches off and the Arrow Buttons revert to their standard functions

2.11 - Aircraft Separation - Increase

Formation CLOSE TIGHT

2.21 - Action - Cover Flight Leader

While the default action settings for wingmen, you may wish your wingmen (or one among up to 3) to revert from an "Attack" mode back to "Cover" mode.  This instruction affects both the role of the wingman and the aircraft separation distance

When instructed to "Cover", the wingman will automatically revert to the default "Loose" 500.ft formation with the Flight Leader

Menu

Who?

Cover

To instruct a wingman to fly cover at a distance different from default, the appropriate actions are as follows :
1) instruct wingman into cover action
2) instruct wingman to spread/close formation

When instructed to "Cover", the wingman will use which ever AA weapons available to him (if out of ammo, the pilot will signal status on RC but will nevertheless engage air threats trying to keep them off the Gamer aircraft)

2.300 - Action - Attacks

The Attack instruction is a two step process where the attack mode is defined first, then the type of weapons (optional)

Air-to-Air

Air-to-Surface

Lead-Attack

Requires weapon choice

Special-Attack

Requires weapon choice

When the weapons type is not defined, the wingman proceeds with attack orders using the appropriate weapon (AA or AS)

When directed to use ASW weapons, the wingmen restricts itself to attacking sub-surface sea/water targets (eg: submarines, dams, etc)

transfer this line

To instruct wingmen to initiate their attack sequence in a formation different from the one they are in, the appropriate set of actions is:
1) instruct wingmen to modify formation
2) instruct wingman into attack

Wingmen never attack a target on which the Flight Leader is locked.

When Wingmen lock on a target, it shows on Flight Leader HUD

When the Flight Leader locks himself on a target already locked on by a wingman, the wingman abort his attack and switches to another target

Formation CLOSE TIGHT

:     50 > 10 ft

Meaningful only to fly demonstration aerobatics and to perform a grouped landing on a wide enough landing strip

Formation Spread-Loose : Wingmen spread keeping a distance of approximately 200 yards between themselves and attack any surface or air target of opportunity at random using whichever appropriate weapon on board.

Formation CLOSE LOOSE

:   200 yards

Formation Close-Loose : Wingmen spread or come in keeping a distance of approximately 200 yards between themselves and and agressively attack any surface or air threat (if out of ammo, the pilot will signal status on RC but will nevertheless engage air threats trying to keep them off the Gamer aircraft)

In effect, it only affects the shape of the formation without modifying the action (cover the FL).  It's the same layout as the Spread-Loose formation (200 yards) but the assumed action(s) is thus different

>>

FLIGHT FORMATION DEFAULT SETUP 1

By default and unless instructed otherwise (by ATC or AEW) the other aircrafts in the flight protect the Flight Leader (FL) from air threats and remain in "Close-Loose" formation

FORMATION SPREAD

By opposition with the close formation flight, wingmen may be ordered to spread at various distances.

Form. SPREAD LOOSE

: 200 yards

Variation of the Close Loose formation option

Form. SPREAD DISTANT

: 500 yards

Typical "search" formation - allows a larger ground or sea area to be surveyed without loosing coordination

Form. SPREAD FAR

: 900 yards

While preventing member of a formation to cover for each other, it does make interception more difficult for ennemies as they in turn have to spread their assets

FORMATION CLOSE

By opposition with the spread formation flight, wingmen may be ordered to stay close to their Squadron Leader in various manners

Formation CLOSE LOOSE

:   200 yards

Typical formation when flying at night or in foul weather (to avoid collisions).
- nearest wingman always covers Leader
  against air threats

Formation CLOSE NEAR

:   50 yards

Typical formation to allow a wingman (at least) to effectively offer cover for the Sq Leader
- Typical air attack formation
- Nearest wingman always covers Leader
  against air threats

Formation CLOSE TIGHT

:     5 yards

Typical formation for aerobatic demonstrations but maybe used in combat
- nearest wingman always covers Leader
  against air threats
