FFAR - FOLDING FIN AERIAL ROCKET

Initially deployed by the Luftwaffe during WWII, unguided rocket as an aerial weapon was further developped by the USA after the war.  In this particular role, this weapon was a failure but it was more successful as an air-to-surface weapon and is still used presently launched from rocket pods.

In the late fifties and early sixties, it was fashionable to equip aircrafts with this internal weapon, either intended in its initial air-to-air role or as an air-to-surface weapon.

In AAC it is mainly intended as an air-to-surface weapon.  As outlined on the Rockets page, there are 2 firing modes for a FFAR pack: by successive pairs or in two salvoes emptying the pack.  While two FFAR layouts are possible with either 1 rocket or 2 rockets in tandem per tube, this doesn't affect the firing modes.  Whether arranged as 24×1, 2×12, or else, a total of 24 FFARs rockets will either be fired in 12 successive pairs or in two salvoes of 12.  The separation time is 0.04 seconds or 1500 rounds/minute

Herebelow is a summary of AAC aircrafts equipped with FFAR as an internal weapon.
