LANDING MIRRORS

EARLY LANDING MIRRORS ON AIRCRAFT CARRIERS
The so called "landing mirrors" were made of a set of lights informing the pilot about his relative position in his glide slope or angle of descent.  The main landing mirror was usually installed on the port side of the ship, with a second item placed on starboard for redundancy.   The various parts could be briefly described as follows :

Datum Lights : a horizontal set of green lights used to give the pilot an horizontal reference in relation with the landing axe (either too far to the left or to the right or on the mark

Ball Light : a single yellow light which will be seen either above or below the datum lights line - if the aircraft is too low, the light will show red - if the aircraft is too high, the light will appear off the top of the mirror

Wave Off Lights : red flashing lights which instruct the pilot to add full power and go around for another landing attempt - when the Wave Off Lights go on, all other lights will be switched of

White Cut Off Lights : white lights flashing during a couple of seconds giving clearance to the aircraft to continue landing approach.   Subsquent flashes of the Cut Lights instruct the pilot to add power; the longer the Cut Off Lights are flashing the more power the pilot is required to add

GreenCut Off Lights : at set of green lamps located above the mirror, which had a different signification depending on where the landing aircraft was in its pattern :
lights flashing for a couple of seconds meant a clearance to land
lights flashing for a longer period meant that power had to be added - the longer they flashed the more power was required
 
It is understood that on the Dutch carrier Karel Doorman these lights were inactivated, with only the white Cut Lights being used for landing clearance

These devices evolved somewhat since they were invented in the mid fifties but in AAC a simple system will be used, largely inspired by the one described on www.vlaggeschipsmaldeel5.nl  -  Part 1  -  Part 2  -  Part 3
  
AAC will use a simple device for two reasons : (1) it's consistent with the 1963-1967 time period  (2) it's totally superfluous as landing on an aircraft carrier in AAC is more a simulacre than a simulation, and should not be difficult to the point of needing pinpoint accuracy.   The landing mirror(s) will nevertheless give true indications and as such will participate to simulation-like atmosphere of AAC.

LANDING MIRRORS IN ATLANTIC AIR COMBAT
Landing mirrors will be used both on carriers and at naval air stations.   Like their real-life brethens, they will come by pairs and made of several sets of lights giving indications about the flight path, inviting the player to make appropriate corrections.  Before entering this description it is reminded that carrier landing procedure differs for piston and jet engined aircrafts :

piston engined aircrafts are supposed to cut power just prior touch down - engine response being instantaneous, a missed wire won't end up with a ditch - slam power back and the player's aircraft will just take off again for another landing attempt

jet/turboprop engined aircrafts need to increase thrust to military power just prior to touch down or a missed wire may end up with a ditch (and the loss of that particular airframe when attrition is "on") as jet engine response is delayed by 1 second.

Landing Procedures
The landing procedure requires a radio request for landing (see: ROE - ATC).  Once landing permission granted, the player will receive instructions regarding heading, speed and altitude.   Then, since a friendly ship never fires at a friendly aircraft, the player may present himself near a carrier, and respond to light instructions.   The point of entry is located at an altitude of 600 ft above deck level at a distance of 1.5 nautical mile (see graphic on top of this page).   When skipping flight time toward a carrier, the player will resume flight at this point of entry.

The following apply to both landing mirrors, located on the port and starboard sides of the ship (or Naval Air Station) :

Aiming Angle of 3.5 : the descent angle is 3 to 4 from an altitude of 600 ft at 1.5 nautical mile from the ship, the aiming angle of the mirror light is 3.5
