RADAR ABOARD AIRCRAFT CARRIERS

The notion of radar in Atlantic Air Combat™ is examined in several preliminary AAC documents in a slightly disorganized manner.  In time, the main page will be 72.100 with others pertaining to the various sub-chapters.  Background notes are low lighted in this table:

INTRODUCTION - The notion of radar in Atlantic Air Combat™

SHIPBORNE RADARS See also :

Since AAC is an aircraft simulation-like game, shipborne radar range against anything else than aircrafts is of no interest.  While there will be several "radar" performances according to ship type, aircraft carriers will be arbitrarily donned with the most peforming.  However, these specifications are related to the type of ships, not the operator.

MEASUREMENTS
Ranges are essentially expressed in yards and altitude in feet.   Conversions are reproduced on the Measurements page.

UNDETECTED ALTITUDE APPLYING TO SHIP & LAND-BASED RADARS

Within AAC, a standard "undetected" altitude below which radar detection is nil will be determined applying indIfferently above water and above landscape.  At this moment, it is suggested 200 ft (61 metres), but could be lowered if it doesn't give the expected result feel of extreme low flyin .   While real world low combat flying is below 100 ft, we have to keep in mind some players will be less skilled than others.

A lower (60 ft) altitude could be set for some "experienced" level ?

The "undetected" altitude only apply to players, not to AI directed aircrafts which do not enjoy this relative protection (ie: friendly shipborne or landbased radars will pick them up, and direct the player toward this intruder)

Maximum and Minimum Ranges
The maximum range at 50,000 ft is 400,000 yards
The minimum range at 200 ft is 20,000 yards

AAC RADAR TYPES & DETECTION RANGES

While distances are normally expressed in nautical miles for distance and feet for altitude, here is a comprehensive table based on the above graphic.  Conversion tool used :
yards to nautical mile yard to mile Yard to kilometre
nautical mile to yard mile to yard kilometre to yard

Besides airborne radars aboard combat aircrafts, there will be four radar references, all of the "air search" type, for the purpose of covering four main functions.  Three of them are surface based, eigher ashore or afloat, and one airborne.  One radar type may assume the role of fire control for guns and/or missiles.

FUNCTIONS
GCI Control tower - directs aircrafts in the immediate vicinity of airports, air bases or GCI van
ATC Air Trafic Control - directs aircrafts away from air bases or airports during their flight to destination
SEW Surface Early Warning - provides longer range coverage, otherwise acts as ATC
AEW Airborne Early Warning - same as above, airborne rather than land or ship based
FCL Fire controls - directs AA gun fire or SAM toward their target

APPLICATIONS
MC Merchant ships : no air search radar
AO Naval re-supply ships : navy operated cargo or tanker ships; may be armed with light AA guns
SS Submarines : some are equipped with light AA guns
DE Corvettes : light escort naval ships
DD Destroyer : medium sized naval ships, some heavily armed, some with SAMs (DDG)
CC Cruiser : large naval ships, heavily armed, some with SAMs (CCG)
BB Battleship : very large naval ships, heavily armed
CV Aircraft carriers : all in the name; some in AAC are equipped with light SAMs
AEW Airborne Early Warning : airborne radar
Airports : civilian airports
AFB/NAS : AFB = air force base  -  NAS = Naval Air Station
GCI-Van Mobile radar : all in the name; mobile control tower, battlefield bombing director, local early warning, etc...
SAM-Site SAM Base (synonym) : from which fixed anti-aircraft missiles are fired
GUN-Site GUN Base (snynonym) : from which fixed anti-aircraft guns are fire
SEW-Site Radar base : hosting large sized long range radar(s) for ground-based early warning
ATC-Site Radar base : hosting medium sized medium range radar(s)

DETECTION RANGES

In Atlantic Air Combat™ the relation between detection range and altitude is strictly linear : the further aloft the target, the earlier it will be detected by surrounding radars.  The functioning of AAC shore and sea based radars is as follows :

  • Basic values are in feet for altitude and yards for range (conversions in the below table are rounded figures)

  • There is a minimum altitude coverage, under wich it is possible to fly undetected (200 ft - could be set lower)

  • This "undetected" altitude only applies to players, not to AI directed aircrafts which do not enjoy this relative protection (ie: friendly shipborne or landbased radars will pick them up, and direct players toward intruders)

  • not all radars have the same detection range, see below table and graphs

  • target size : an aircraft is either classified as a fighter-sized aircraft (FF), and these include any aircraft smaller than that, or a bomber-sized aircraft (BB).  Thus, AAC is not playing with the notion of RCS (radar cross section).  Should a "low observable" aircraft be considered it would just fall into the "lower" category; as this would be impossible for a fighter a 50% ratio could apply.  Then, there weren't any of the kind in the 1960s.  Possible exceptions
    - the XB-70A Valkyrie : would fall in the FF category - the XF-5U Pancake : a 50% FF ratio would apply
    - the A-12/SR-71A : a 50% FF ratio would apply - the Horten 32 : a 50% FF ratio would apply
