GAME  STORY

PREAMBLE

The story which didn't happen ... outside Atlantic Air Combat

THE NATIONS

Soon after the second world war, the world sort of divided between North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and their allies on the one hand, and the Warsaw Pact and allies on the other hand, with both military organisations centered on either the United Stats of America and the Union of Socialist Soviet Republics respectively.

Then, as often, there was the silent majority, the Non Aligned countries, which were not excessively amused by this artificial dichotomy.   Especially as the major partner of each organization would about use the same language : You are either with us or against us.

This so being, in Atlantic Air Combat world, part of the neutral countries decided to unite into a Neutral Coaliation, a third military organization, aggressively independent from the two others, thus dividing the world into four group of nations, digging their weapons from one arsenal or the other, although some had access to both.  The becoming of non aligned countries, not involved with this NATO/WAPA/NECO imbroglio is for the gamer to discover as the game unfolds...

For ease of reading, countries are listed geographically, from North to South, starting with both leading countries, and with Southern non-atlantic countries associated with the Southern list.   Naturally, this is the situation imagined in ... 1963, where Albania already exited the Warsaw Pact.

THE TRIGGER EVENT

The Ňaland archipelago have had a controversial history between the end of the Imperial Russia, which saw Finland proclaiming its sovereignty, and the aftermath of the First World War.  The League of Nations had been successful in having the matter solved between Sweden and Finland and essentially the islanders had carried on with a peaceful life ejoying large autonomy under Finnish sovereignty.

Nationalists in Moscow entertained a slightly different view, actually never fully accepting the loss of the Grand Duchy of Finland.   The Communist regime in place since 1917 haven't changed that view, and there were more than an few high ranking officials who remembered that the islands once hosted a submarine base, something to would wish to revive.   So, based on the rather twisted view that these islands where once Russian, Moscow decided to despatch a naval squadron to invade the Ňaland, re-establish their sovereignty with prospect of rebuilding a submarine base together with Air Force facilities.

For Finland, it was a revival of the Winter War which saw the Soviet Union invading their country to offer a larger buffer zone for Leningrad.   Here, the USSR faked some far fetched artificial sovereignty dispute only to fulfill some military views.   The United Nations were of no more help than the League of Nations had been a few decades before, but the difference was that the Neutral Coalition standed fast and by invading this tiny set of islands, effectively declared war against Sweden and Switzerland whose armed forces were manned with eager professionals rather than amateurs.

On the other hand, NATO could not accept USSR basing sumarines nor fighters or bombers so far west in the Baltic and West Germany immediately retaliated with the helf of Danemark.   This in turn leads the USSR to move west, with two objectives : break NECO by devastating Austria and Switzerland and defeat NATO on their own grounds.  That wasn't the only Soviet move as at the same time the USSR wanted to deprive Western countries to freely use both the North and South Atlantic : a seizure of key points from one pole to the other would grant such a claim.

So, what started as a projected military base in an enclosed sea ended up into all out war fought on European land and in various parts of the Atlantic, involving NATO, NECO and other non-aligned countries whose goals could not be more different one from the other.
