INTRODUCTION

The AJ-1 Savage was a 3-engined, mixed propulsion, carrier borne bomber aircraft of the early 1950s.   It came too late to see any action during the Korean war, and was obsolete when the USA were involved in the Vietnam war.   Two versions were produced, the second one being a photo-reconnaissance bomber.   Most early AJ-1 were rebuilt as AJ-2, and many if not all airfames where converted into shipborne aerial tankers.  All three variants, bomber, recce and tanker, are of interest to Atlantic Air Combat™  even if it has been retired prior 1963.

SPECIFICATIONS

The MTOW in AAC
With AAC referring to a slightly different mass ratio for fuel and ammunition, weights are thus re-calculated the AAC way  leading to apparent overweight - noted "as is" for this little study.

The Aerial Tankers in AAC
Aerial tankers are flown exclusively by the game AI.  There is no limitation in the amount of fuel delivered to players, with the only restiction being the number of aircrafts able to refuel simultaneously

BOMBLOAD

Internal Weapon Loads
The above mentioned 12,000 lb payload refers the the detailed bomb load shown below.  Part of this background information is either reasonably verified  (in blue) or fictional (in dark red).  The precise arrangement of these various loads is however unknown.  While it's easy to imagine how 4×AN/M-66 bombs were organized, 16×AN/M-30 is more difficult to guess.

The fictional part is based on the assumption that if the AJ-1 could carry the Mk4 atomic bomb (around which the Savage was designed), it could also carry the 12,000 lb Pumpkin bomb.  The other fictional internal loads are then based on that assumption and on a fictional internal layout.

External Weapon Loads
The Savage wasn't carrying any weapon externally, but a AAC™ fantasy variant shall.

The Mayhem  in Atlantic Air Combat™

Although the Savage from which the Mayhem  is inspired was retired prior 1963, it should be included in AAC™ to add to the variety of targets and the addition of a vintage carrier born bomber should keep vintage amateurs happy.

Beyond an imitation of the original bomber (A1J2B10), reconnaissance (A1J2P15) and tanker (A1J2K20) variants, a fantasy attack variant (A1J2B11) shall be prepared with the following cheats :

Extra weight summary (rough approximation)

10506 lb

12390 lb

The wing pylons accept FFAR launchers (LAU-51/A with 18×70mm rockets) or gunpods (2×AN/M3, 340 rpg) and thus up to 750 lb bombs each.

The above weight breakdown  is all but scientific and should be reas as a feasibility check  of these cheats, or at least to keep them within reason - the resulting 1,884 lbs extra weight might be rounded up when finalizing the A1J2B11 Data Sheet.

The internal gun layout is merely borrowed from the F-86 (incidentally another North American product).

The engines replacement come from production aircraft.  They are somewhat heavier, but not excessively and it is assumed the diameter of the jet engines are similar enough (1283mm for the J33 against 1270mm for the J48).  The J-48-P-8A should actually read 7250/8500 lbf as this was its output with water injection, but is is here assumed this accessory power is ruled out.

The fantasy extra power obtained (+2,400 hp/+48% and +2,650 lbf/+57%) is imagined to boost performances, especially top speed, and raise the MTOW to 60,580 lbs, a 12% increase compared to the standard AJ but a 5% increase only compared to the AJ-2K (which didn't had the tail jet engine).  But a 60,580 Lb MTOW would include the tip tanks and the fictional underwing stores.
