INTRODUCTION

The Avro A696/A716 Shackleton was a piston engined maritime patrol and ASW aircraft the design of which could be traced back to the Avro 683 Lancaster a British heavy bomber made ignominiously famous during WWII by the RAF.  As a post-war design, it saw service with the Royal Air Force and South African Air Force.

The ShackleStar  in Atlantic Air Combat™

The presence in AAC™ of a design mimicking the Avro Shackleton rests ont its use by both the Royal and the South African Air forces   However, all Atlantic Air Combat™ variants have similar performances and share the same bomb bay, meaning not all original details are respected.  In particular, the ShackleStar borrows elements from various iterations of its historical reference.  The aircraft will be available with their historical post-war operators.

Fuel Capacity

The A683 Lancaster fuel system consisted of six connected tanks in the wings for a total capacity of 2154 gal (9792 litres).  A 400 gal additional fuel tank could be added in the bomb bay.  As the type evolved toward the A694 Lincoln and A696 Shackleton, the fuel tankage increased, including tip tanks.  In AAC™, range(s) will be defined arbitrarily and will differ from what is shown here.

Defensive Armament

Historically, the Avro Shackleton was designed with following defensive armament : a top turret and a nose turret/barbette both equipped with a pair of 20mm cannon, and a tail turret with two .50cal, guns.  The the tail turret only equipped the VW126 prototype and was not retained for production.  However, all these defensive positions are retained for the fictional AR696AS, and the tail turret shall be equipped with ANM3 guns, which enjoys a higher rate of fire.
