INTRODUCTION

The Avro A696 Shackleton AEW2 was a piston engined air surveillance radar which evolved from the A696 Shackleton MR2 anti-submarine and maritime patrol aircraft, which itself could be traced back to the A683 Lancaster, a WWII British heavy bomber.

The ShackleSky  in Atlantic Air Combat™

The Shackleton AEW2 did not enter service before 1972 (more on www.avroshackleton.com about the real thing) but as we need AEW platform in the game, it is imagined that such an AEW aircraft could have been assembled much earlier, even more so as the AN/APS-20 radar it used was 1945 technology.

Then instead of totally mimicking the A696, the AR697EW is based on the AR696M2 which, in Atlantic Air Combat™ enjoys a tricycle landing gear.  The Fairey Gannet did cope with the equipment, so this fiction is kept within reaso

Fuel Capacity

The A696 Shackleton AEW2 fuel system consisted of connected tanks in the wings for a total capacity of 3550 gal (9792 litres).  With the A697EW being based on a different platform, the total fuel capacity shows differently.  Then in AAC™ the range/endurance of an AEW aircraft is actually unlimited.

Defensive Armament

Historically, the Avro Shackleton was designed with defensive armament but this was later removed, but for the forward firing cannons.  As outlined with the AR696AS, the original layout of the prototype is retained for game purposes.  The AR696EW however is devoid of any defense.
