PREAMBLE

Background pages in general assemble information on the inspiring designs while giving a few hints about where the AAC design will divert from its reference.  It is more apparent for the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress - readers will forgive the multiplicity of sections as they highlights which areas called for attention.  For example, the carrying of weapons under the outer wing pylons is explored on this page and illustrated, but might not necessarily be retained at the end, without this page nor illustrations being updated - the final choice will appear on ... the final Notes (BB52J15 Stratocastle).

INTRODUCTION - THE BOEING B-52

The Boeing B-52 Stratofortress was and remains a major design in the USAF inventory, and it will inspire one among various NATO heavy bombers designs within AAC.   It was produced in nine variants, all available by 1963, meaning any variant is possible in Atlantic Air Combat.

Crew
The Stratrofortress was manned by a crew of six (eight when using the multitask container located in the bomb bay) all equipped with upward or downward firing ejections seats except the gunner when located at the tail of the aircraft.  So, as the AAC BB52J** rests on one of the earlier types, the egress sequence will be a mixed one : bail out + eject.
.

Stratofortress Variants

There is no lack of differences between B-52 variants but only a few are highlighted here :

B-52B
This is the first production variant which was delivered either as B52B bombers or RB52B reconnaissance aircrafts with this particular function located in a special photo-reconnaissance container taking place in the bomb bay.   Worth noting, 34 airframes (18xRB52B and 16 B52B) out of the 50 produced were equipped with a different tail gun arrangement containing two M24A1 20mm guns instead of the classical .50cal quartet.  In the summaries below this arrangement is associated with all "B" airframes which is thus erroneous, albeit deliberately - see: B52B Airframes for accurate details.  Also, one of these B52B was adapted to carry the X-15 experimental aircraft.

B-52C
This second production batch is essentially similar to the RB-52B as all C airframes were able to carry the photo-reconnaissance/multi-task container.   All C variants were later retrofitted to launch the AGM28 Hound Dog stand off missile.  Also, it was fitted with 3,000 US gallons underwing fuel tanks instead of the 1,000 US gallons used on the B52B.

B-52D
The bomb load of this particular version refers to the late 1965 "Big Belly" programme which aimed at increasing the amount of conventional bombs being carried, both internally and externally.  The typical bomb loads of the Big Belly  B-52D compares with other variants as follows :

B52E
The carrying of bombs under the wings wasn't exclusive to the "D" and the "E", retrofitted to carry the AGM-28, was actually the first variant to use the AGM-28 pylon that way.

B52F

Powered by slightly more powerful engines, the "F", like the "C" and "E", were retrofitted to carry the AGM-28 and these missile pylons were used to carry conventional ordnance.

B52G

Designed from the outset to carry the the AGM-28 Hound Dog stand off missile, the G had the same engines as the F, a broader and shorter tail, an increased internal fuel capacity but smaller underwing fuel tanks.  The gunner position moved to the main crew compartment.  Some were retrofitted with the "Big Belly" arrangement.

B-52H
Also designed from the outset to carry the the AGM-28 Hound Dog, the H shared the shorter G tail and was powered by turbofan engines

.

The Atlantic Air Combat BB52J10 Stratocastle

The AAC Stratocastle will combine several of the capacities mentioned above, borrowing them from :
B52A : capacity to carry an experimental aircraft mimicking the X-15 (actually two carried at the same time)
B52B : twin 20mm tail gun for the BR52J15 and capacity to handle the recce pod - .50cal quad for the BB52J10
B52C : the 23000 US gallons underwing fuel tanks
B52D : increased internal bomb carrying capacity
B52E : -
B52F : increased external bomb carrying capacity
B52G : -
B52H : capacity to handle the equivalent of the AGM-28 Hound Dog air-to-surface stand-off strike missile

.

Bomb Load Summary

Besides the enhanced internal and external bomb loads borrowed from the B-52D and F respectively, the Stratocastle will also handle the 10,000 lb T10, the 22,000 lb T14, and the 44,000 lb T12 demolition bombs (more about this on the separate Bomb Loads page)

TENTATIVE WEIGHT BREAKDOW

The purpose of the exercise is to explore the possibility to carry weapons instead of fuel under the outer wing pylons, and to associate B52B airframes with larger underwing fuel tanks, by splitting these from the airframes.  In doing so, the following tentative breakdowns is arrived at.

  • Breakdown-1 table shows overload results (not applicable)
  • Breakdown-2 table shows theoretical maximum payload associated with reduced fuel loads
  • Breakdown-3 table goes one step further, exploring a few AAC fictional loadouts options and associated ranges

  • Internal or external loads should be read as alternative loads with the highest being highlighted
  • B52C, B52E, B52G and BB52J10 illustrate the carrying of AGM-28C Hound Dog (or AAC equivalent) missiles only
  • B52D, B52F, B52H and BB52J15 illustrate the carrying of full internal and external bomb loads

IFR - In Flight Refueling

- - - - - - - - -

The AAC refueling rate is 770 gal/min (or 925 US gal or 3500 litres).  The timings below only show how low the IFR would take to compensate the lower amount of fuel to compensate for the extra play load, not taking into account the amount of "fuel" consumed up to the rendez-vous point.  Actual refueling time will thus be much more than that but when connexion is made AAC players will be allowed to squeeze the time to avoid getting bored

BB52J** Airframes
If the BB52J idea is maintained, and keeping in mind the "attrition" aspect of AAC, we are contemplating 50 airframes, two of which being the "NESA" operated aircrafts carrying a high speed, high altitude "prize" experimental vehicle, mimicking the actual 52-008 airframe (and B-52A) used for so many years by NASA.  We shall call "BB52J10" the 16 airframes equipped with the 4x.50cal tail gun, "BB52J15" the 32 airframes equipped with the twin 20mm tail gun, and "BB52N20" the two airframes modified to carry an experimental aircrafts.

The AGM-28 Hound Dog Stand-Off Missile      AGM-28C Illustration      AGM-28D ata and Illustration
Without entering into unnecessary details, the AGM-28 was a nuclear tipped missile which could be fired 650 nm away from its target (or 345 nm for a low altitude missile flight path).  While AAC's ban on nuclear weapons initially ruled it out, it being rather unique in the Western arsenal lead to some re-thinking.  Considering the weight of the nuclear warhead (790kg), the same mass of high explosive added to the kinetics of a 4 tons missile impacting at Mach 2 makes it an interresting tool.  A weapon mimicking this missile shall therefore be added to the BB52 inventory with a conventional warhead.   The question of the volume occupied by 790kg of HE is dispensed with and is handled as a de facto detail.  Also, this fantasy AGM-28D is supposedly equipped with a semi-active radar enabling it to be used for anti-shipping purposes.

Back to historical notes : while earmarked for the G and H models, earlier variants were retrofitted with the capacity to deliver this particular missile.  It is understood that all of the "C" models were so retrofitted and most of the "D", "E", and "F" variants.

USAF Units

The purpose of this little summary is not to identify all Wings/Squadrons/Groups which flew the B-52, but only to identify a few (one for each variant).  Considering the suggested "Js" are retrofitted "Bs", we might select its main user, 95 Wing, 334 Squadron, either operating from Biggs AFB or from the B-52 secondary base in UK : RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire.   Alternatively, a fictional xx Wing yy Squadron might be created at Ramey AFB (more to the point as far as the Atlantic is concerned)
