INTRODUCTION

The English Electric Canberra  was a twin engined jet bomber also manufactured under license in Australia and the USA.  The aircraft was developped into several variants and special applications and exported widely (more on this page).  To only name a few operators within the AAC time frame of interest :

Canberra Historical Variants (selection of)

The gun pack on the B6/B8 actually applies to the B.6(i) sub-variant and the B.8(i)

Bomb Loads & Bomb Bay Dimensions

Besides the US variant having a rotary bomb bay than conventional clamshell doors, it seems bombs were arranged in 2 lines .. rows in the original variant and 3 lines .. rows in the US B-57.  Having said that, pictures of B-57 carrying Mk177 bombs only show 4 of them, althoug the diameter of these is similar to the 500lb bomb.    Dimensions were as follows (reasonably verified in blue), guessed in black, fake values in red)
UK variant (LWH) : 21'10" ??'??" ??'??".
UK variant (LWH) : 17'00" ??'??" ??'??".

There is always a difference between what a bomber could carry and what it actually carried when used in anger.  For the Canberra, the war in Vietnam seems to be the main reference event.  Besides what's shown in the table, here are a few short notes copied here and there - sources provided when possible (see links in the table):

RAAF - Canberra B.20
81500 lb internally 1967.00 - 1968.06
61000 lb internally + 21000 lb on the wingtip positions, in lieu of the 250 gal fuel tanks 1967.00 - 1968.06
41750 lb (Mk117) internally + 21750 lb (Mk117) on the wingtip positions, see photo 1968.06 - >>

Source : "... Because the distances were comparatively short and they did not need their tip tanks for normal operations bomb racks were quickly manufactured to replace them, this gave the Canberra a bomb load of up to eight bombs of 1,000 Lb weight. The standard bomb bay configuration was for six bombs on two triple carriers but due to problems with bombs hanging up the alternate system of six bombs on individual racks was used.    (...)

The bombs used during the early period came from Bomb Dumps throughout Australia , they had been around since the end of WW II and although old were certainly still good, in all some 27,568 of these used, after that standard USAF weapons were the norm. In order to accommodate the longer USAF bombs modifications to the bomb bay had to be carried out, this then allowed a standard load of 4x750s in bomb bay 2x750s on wing tips..."
