INTRODUCTION

Designed in the 1930s, this aircraft underwent several modifications and upgrades during the (infamous) second world war.  While the presence of this particular aircraft type is outlined on the "The Bf109 in Atlantic Air Combat" page, here is a tentative summary of the numerous iteration of this aircraft..

The purpose of this summary was to provide a background set of data for any AAC "cheat", but also to offer a comprehensive comparison table for anyone interrested.  Any error on this page may be reported to : pierre.deveaux@laposte.net

Main Summary - Comment
Bf109D1a

It is unclear whether this export variant to Switzerland was "re-gunned" by the Swiss Air Force.   If so, they are likely to have replaced the (missing ?) MG17 cowl guns by their own MG29/7.50mm but it is not known to this author whether the airframes received were equipped with a kanon engine or not.   If they were, the 20mm Oerlikon OeFF (20x72mm) could have been installed but the reference is shown between brackets as the information could not be cross verified.  The Bf109D1a is discarded from AAC but the above may matter to other readers - any update welcome.

Bf109E3a

The J-355 airframe preserved in the Dubendorf Museum shows a hollow spinner as if there had been a cannon there.  However, the Luftwaffe E3 seemed not to have been equipped that way, so there is little reason to believe the Swiss E3 engine would have provided for such installation.   It is howewer well documented that the aircrafts supplied to Switzerland in 1940 were lacking any armament, hence the installation of indigenious manufactured MG29 machine guns above the engine, and Oerlikon FF 20mm cannons in the wings

Gun Layouts of the Bf 109

Bf109 Variants Used By Post World War II Operators

If we go a little further into details, the summary below aims at identifying engine type, weapons set up and other main aspects of the main variants used after WW2, with the Swiss Me109D1 and E1 deliberately discarded.

The table apparently shows discrepencies or ... missing information : for the most part it has been retrieved from common litterature, but some piece of information regarding the G6 were copied from Pilot's Notes from the Finnish Air Force, hence the apparent discrepencies (amount of ammunition, fuel consumption, ...).   AAC Me109 will somewhat standadize this but the table is commented further below.

Comment on Table 2

It seems reasonably clear that Swiss Bf109E were not equipped with a Motorkanone firing through the propeller hub.  An Oerlikon FF is added here for weight comparison purposes only - the Aircraft Data Sheet will show differently

The quantities of ammunitions for the Finnish Bf109G come from a Finnish Air Force aircraft manual; they differ from what the litterature usually mention - it's shown here for comparison purposes, and the empty weight is cheated to match the published "combat weight"

Fuel weight is calculated along AAC standard

Specific fuel consumption varies with sources : according to Wikipedia it's roughly 0.44 but an average calculated on data published in the Finnish Air Force Bf109 manual gives a very different reading - a figure will be adopted in the AAC Data Sheet

Historically, the Bf109G could be equipped with a pair of 21 cm (8 in) Wfr. Gr. 21 aerial rockets (G-6 with BR21) lodged in launching tubes (total weight of the tube+rocket assembly : 247lb).  For AAC purposes, the Bf109 could be equipped with a pair of air-to-ground heavy rockets of similar weight but launched from wing pylons

The exact type of Oerlikon 80mm rocket used by the Spanish Air Force is unknown - unlikely to the SNORA as this one only appeared in the 1960s - weight shown is an educated guess only

The MG151 gondola guns of the Bf109G added a total weight (with ammo) of 215 kg to the aircraft.  This weight may be seen as follows:
   = Item Weight Sub-Total Sub-Total
   Frame & Misc   =   345.50 lb   157 kg
 MG 151 (20x82mm) 43 kg 94.80 lb 43 kg
 Ammunition  80 rpg 42 lb/100 33.60 lb 15 kg
 Total = 474.00 lb 215 kg

The last line of the table compares AAC calculated MTOW (in bold red) with known values - discrepencies are minimal, notwithstanding the fantasy use of HVAR rockets, which was the purpose of the excercise.

The Bf109T are thus here re-gunned with Swiss weapons
