PBM3C : radar in a dorsal bulge - Crutches under the wing roots for 21-inch Mk13 torpedoes
        power-operated turrets in the nose, tail and dorsal position each with two .50 guns
PBM3D : 1900hp R-2600-22 engines
        extended engine nacelles/bomb bay for up to 4000 lb of bombs (total)
PBM3S : only 4 machine guns, no powered turret but even more fuel
PBM5  : 2100hp engines, increased fuel, and an APS-15 radar
PBM5A : amphibian, R-2600-34 engines.

Total wartime production of the Mariner was 1289.
Over 500 were still in frontline service during the Korean War.
 
  On 9 November 1958, an Aero-Topográfica PBM-5 (registration CS-THB) disappeared on a scheduled passenger flight from Cabo Ruivo, Lisbon, Portugal to Funchal Airport, Funchal, Madeira. The last radio transmission from the aircraft (when it was about 13°W) was: "I am forced to land immediately." No trace has ever been found of the aircraft, its six crew or 30 passengers.[30]
