Motor Torpedo Boats, Motor Gun Boats, Schnellboots and other fast launches/patrol boats were widely manufactured before and during WWII, in particular Germany, United Kingdom, the United States to only mention those three.  But Italy was also a large war operator (and manufacturer) of such crafts, together with Finland - but the list is too long to mention.

Past 1945, some war veterans soldiered on in various roles or were produced to satisfy other needs, like the Air-Sea Rescue boats made in 1946 for the South African Navy.  A few ex-German Schnellboots were even re-refitted for service as late as the early fifties and perhaps more significantly, Yugoslavia produced more than eighty Higgins 78' PT-boats between 1951 and 1959 to complement the eight received from the United States.

But new designs also emerged after the war, with the British Brave class (and its Danish derivative) probably being one of the best illustrations : of similar size and carrying similar albeit less prolific armament, they were powered by the best aircraft power plants of the time: gas turbines, somehow mimicking the Elco and Higgins whose Packard V12 supercharged technology originated from among the best fighter aircraft engines of their time.

As the US involvement in Vietnam was looming up, and with the creation of the Navy Seals in 1962, a support craft was needed.  Two post-war PT boats (PT-810 & PT-811 - see end of page) were refurbished, soon to be complemented with Norwegian designed/manufactured Nasty  patrol boats.  While a different design they essentially were the same thing, donned with a pair of extra poweful locomotive diesel engines.  The USN purchased 16 of them, and secured a license to build another six in the US.

Then came more modern interpretations of the concept of fast motor boat, with the anti-ship missiles equipped Soviet Pr183R and Pr.205, although the latter were much longer and heavier boats.

Below is a selection of a fast boat designs and post-war operators illustrating why these fast sea targets  are made widely available in Atlantic Air Combat™.  Anyone wishing to contribute and expend this summary or ... correct any error is welcome.  Various sources have been used to assemble this summary, among them :

The first table starts with the US Elco 80'/Higgings 78' as these were principally referred to when defining what a MTB would be in AAC™.  The second table regroups other patrol boats which, while fulfilling similar roles and further illustrating the MTB idea, differs siginificantly, either in size, displacement or speed (an arbitrary and subjective selection).

Motor Torpedo Boats in Finland

Extract from an article published on : http://kotisivut.fonet.fi/~aromaa/Navygallery/Smallship/MTB.htm

In 1940 Finland had ordered at least 23 motor torpedo boats from four countries

3 boats from England - not delivered (Thornycroft)

A contract for 1Χ81ft Scott-Paine and 5Χ70ft Higgins boats was signed with Higgins in March '40 but in spite of advance payment the boats were sold to Britain.  In compensation Higgins promised Finland seven new built 70ft PT boats which were never delivered in fear of them falling into Germans hands.  Instead, theyt also sold to Britain. The 12 Higgins boats were named MGB 69 to MGB 73 and MGB 100 to MGB 106.

10 boats from France - not delivered

5 boats from Italy - "Hurja" class delivered in 1943

The number of motor torpedo boats increased in 1943 with three new classes of boats.

H-class ("Hurja" class)

Five boats ordered in 1940 with Baglietto in Italy and transported to Finland by land and sea. Their main (aircraft) engines were of low quality with their power significantly decreasing after 20h of use. They were removed from MTB operations in the beginning of sailing season 1943 and used as mine and smoke screen layers.

J-class ("Jymy" class)

Four boats of Italian XII Squadriglia MAS that operated on Lake Ladoga in 1942. The original names were MAS 526 to MAS 529. The boats were purchased 5.5.1943 in Tallinn and transported to Helsinki

T-class ("Taisto" class)

Six boats of total number of 8 constructed.  Last two boats were delivered after the Continuation War. They were licensed by Baglietto and built in Finland. Slightly different bottom shape gave higher speed and better seakeeping properties than the original construction

V-class

In Continuation War Finnish troops captured five small vessels, four in 1941 and one in 1944. These boats were VTV 1, Vasama, Vihuri, Viima and V 3

VTV 1 or Vartiotykkivene 1 was heavily armed and armoured boat. VTV 1 was originally armoured launch 251. It was found near Pukkio in August 1941, the boat had been damaged by shells and beached to prevent sinking. The boat was raise and repaired. After a short tour in Gulf of Finland it was transported to Lake Onega.

Vasama was a wooden motor torpedo boat of Soviet type D 3, originally TK 52.  It was found sunken in Borstφ in October 1941 where it had run aground in storm.  TK 52 had sailed from Suursaari 12 October with TK 32 and TK 62 but had lost contact with them. The boat ran aground, damaged propellers and drifted to west.  After air attacks on 13, 14 and 15 of October, many of the crew were wounded, including the commander who killed himself.  The boat passed Hanko during the night 16/17 and ran aground at 7 o'clock on 17th.  Vasama was repaired during the winter and began its sailing season on May 2, 1942.  The boat was tested during 1942 to find the most suitable role.  In 1942 Vasama was used as MTB with two torpedoes and as patrol boat with one 40 mm Bofors gun.  In 1943 Vasama sailed only one patrol with MTB's and sailed as command boat with patrol boats of 2 VmvLv.  In 1944 Vasama sailed with 2 VmvLv.  Vasama was then moved to Porkkala on October 26, 1944 prior being returned to the Soviet Union.

Torpedo details

Motor torpedo boats had 45 cm torpedos. The first ones were naturally old 45-cm Whitehead torpedos of type T/12. The British weapons purchased during Winter War were known as type T/39. The captured boats had 45 cm or 53 cm torpedoes. From Germany Finland purchased Soviet war booty torpedos. The 45 cm torpedos were known as type T/36 and 53 cm torpedos as T/38

Torpedo Type Origin Diameter Weight Warhead
T-12 Whitehead USSR 450 mm   835 kg 155 kg
T-36 USSR 450 mm   950 kg 200 kg
T-38 USSR 533 mm 1615 kg 300 kg
T-39 Britain 450 mm

The motor torpedo boats were poorly armed against enemy ships and planes. In the beginning of Continuation war the only defence was a 7.62 mm machine gun. They were borrowed form the Air Force and originally used as observer's guns. The guns were nicknamed "Mikki-Hiiri", that is "Mickey Mouse"
