If the Types VII and IX U-boats had been the main types operated by the Germans during the war, they were soon to be replaced with the Type XXI, with more than 900 hulls assembled or in construction  Designed from the outset as a true submarine rather than a submersible vessel, the Type XXI attack submarine marked a leap forward in terms of performances and inspired several post-war designs like the Soviet "Whiskey" class or the French Narval.  After the war, a handful served with the Soviet Union till the mid fifties, and France operated one as late as 1967.

In Atlantic Air Combat™, more boats and navies are involvled than were in real life in order to feed the number of targets. Then, if these cheats are based on alternate facts this page adresses the background information.

The real story was that in the final days of the war, the Kriegsmarine drew a plan codnamed Regenbogen for the mass scuttling of their U-boats. While it was proceeded with as from May 1, the actual order was only issued on May 5 and rescinded the same day.  U-boats nevertheless continued to be sent to the bottom in the following days, and among them many XXIs.  On 8 May, Germany surrendered unconditionally and remaining naval units surrendered to Allied forces.

According to the Potsdam Agreement, all but thirty submarines were to be sunk with the remaining ones to be divided equally between the three powers.  That done, it was the responsibility of United Kingdom to scuttle the unwanted German U-Boats.  Operation Deadlight was the code name for the scuttling operations which took place from Lisahally, Northern Ireland (30 boats) and Loch Ryan, Scotland (86 boats) between November 1945 and February 1946.

In Atlantic Air Combat™, the Potsdam Agreement is somewhat revisited into a fictional Revised Potsdam Agreement, [RPA] where more boats are being distributed and no Type XXI were scrapped.  In particular, the following U-boats are cheated in AAC™ :

TYPE XXI PRODUCTION

Thinking of the damage created by nearly 900 Type VII and IX U-boats, during the early years of the war, one may imagine how harful 900 Type XXI could have been.  Here is the list of Type XXI submarines :
