Bombs - General Purpose

"GP" bombs also called "dumb bombs" or "gravity bombs", are the main core of Atlantic Air Combat™ bombs even if a few other types may co-exist in  the game.  AAC™ GP bombs are listed on the main page, with this background page dedicated to collected data.  Not all vintage bombs are of interest to AAC™ and the values eventually retained for AAC purposes may differ from what is shown here.  A good example is the 4,000 lb US M-56 for which a total weight value of 4750 lb has been fournd and retained (but the source lost !!), but this also applies to the Soviet bombs of the 1940s and 1950s for which scores of data variants have been collected - when retained, a single set of values will be associated with a given bomb type/reference.

_*_ training rounds

In general terms, and contrary to their US equivalent, data or details regarding British Cold War bombs are sketchy and hard to find.  Single point suspension was typically British and not restricted to WWII era.  For instance, if the Lancaster and Lincoln were equipped to cater with single point suspended bombs so were the Canberras.  So, bombs designed after the war still had a single suspension point.  Many were later updated to NATO standards (14" spaced lugs)  and even saw their explosive filling replaced with a more modern one.

The cold war British bombs are restricted to two models.  Whether 1,000 lb or 500 lb, British bombs are indentified by their Mark number but these various Marks are difficult to distinguish as they share the same outer case, differing only by the method of suspension, the types of explosive fillings and fuse(s).  Details as they were collected are assembled here below and these are thus very thin.  It should not have mucch of an influence in AAC.

This one is a fake.  Based on the "HE 2,000 lb MC Mk.1/Mk.2" a 2,000 lb GP bomb of similar dimensions has been imagined for the purpose of AAC™.  Mentioned here on this background page to set this item in perspective.

WWII VINTAGE BOMBS

In Atlantic Air Combat™, British WWII bombs are of limited interest and little use, but for a couple of vintage aircraft, especially as the MC series very much ressembles the US AN/M series, making them redundant.  However, should this decision be challenged, the appropriate data has been collected.  This "renunciation" approach does not apply to unique items, like the HC and DP series which should find their way inside British inspired bombers.

British bombs are designated by purpose, weight, and Mark number. The purpose is indicated with initials or the complete name (eg: "Smoke").  So a correct British bomb description must mention the use, weight class and Mark number in that order (eg: GP 250lb Mark V).  The purpose abbreviations are as follows :

Armor piercing bombs AP General purpose bombs GP Practice bombs Practice
Anti-submarine bombs AS High capacity bombs HC ?... bombs RAF
Anti-tank bombs AT Incendiary bombs IB ?... bombs RL
Buoyancy bombs B Infantry training bombs IT Semi-armor piercing bombs SAP
Aircraft depth charges DC Medium capacity bombs MC ?... bombs SN
Fragmentation bombs F Target illuminating flares TI Smoke bombs Smoke

Suspension of British Bombs

British bombs were suspended by a single lug screwed to the bomb body.  Later designs were fitted with additional dual suspension lugs for carrying by US aircraft.

Colors and Markings

H.E. bombs were originally painted yellow. The change to dark green happened at about the same time the United States changed to olive drab.  Complete information, including weight, type, mark number, filling, date filled, filling station, lot number will be found stencilled on the outside. The location may vary from one bomb type to the other but the following sketch will indicate the information to be found and its approximate location.
