Preliminary Notes;

The X15 mission(s) imagined would be a phased-in process with : 

  • a 1st flight where the AI would repeat this record breaking X-15A Mission 091 - the gamer is a passenger to this flight, either in standard cockpit or in the back seat of a fantasy X-15B  -  this discovery flight may naturally be repeated at will

  • a 2nd flight where the gamer is expected to follow AI directions and "fly" to the highest possible altitude, with a target altitude of over 100 km  -  player should be able to repeat attempts  -  a total of 3 airframes allows loosing control and a couple of airframes  -  "insert coins" to get more  (read: accumulate game credits)

  • a 3rd flight where the gamer is expected to follow AI directions and reach the highest possible speed, with a target speed of over Mach 6.0  -  same remarks as above regarding the number of airframes available

In the absence of any know equivalent experimental aircraft with similar performances in the "Eastern Block", it is suggested to "invent" a copy of the X-15 and make it a Soviet aircraft.   The USSR has been clearly successful in copying the Concorde, so why not crediting them with another intelligence gathering success ?   North American, the builder of the X-15 had a proposal for a delta winged version of their plane : a good candidate for a soviet variant.

For players choosing to play the game from a NECO perspective, it is suggested to offer the choice between the two programmes.   Pitch wise, it should be presented as a gesture of "goodwill" from both main opponents.

 

 

 

The Story Which Didn't Happen...

Like any of their counterparts, the Soviet Secret Services have had their successes and their failures.   Among their successes was the complete technical and industrial files for the X15, and not only the initial version but also the planned stretched version which became the X-15A2, and the projected (but nevery built) X-15A3 delta plane as well.

Strangely enough for a country who produced so many reliable rocket engines, the Soviets had difficulty with copying the XLR99 engine : it would work all right, but not reliably.  In order to avoid loosing an airframe because of engine problems (at that time, the American hadn't), engineers choosed to install two smaller rockets whose combined thrust would match the XLR99.

However, while the stretch applied to one Americal airframe was to cope with extra hydrogen fuel tank for auxiliary engines, the S-15A3 as it was to be nicknamed would only have a little extra fuel giving the aircraft an additional 5 seconds of rockets burning time on internal fuel.   Soviet leaders thought that would be enough to beat their rival with ... their own tools.
