NOTES

The "AEW" function is a radio tool similar to "ATC"  but is essentially intented as a navigation aid and to request and receive information

about compass headings to given points of interest

about the tactical situation

about the ongoing Mission or Flight

The device is complex with the function button leading to a first Menu offering 4 main options, themselves leading to as many Sub-Menus  click on the boxes below to see a graphical representations of these menus

Radio - AEW Menu ON

When ATC  is ON

Radio - AEW Menu OFF

Closes the (main) Menu

The action thus requires the successive use of the appropriate keys
1st : the main function key
2nd: the appropriate direction key

The sequence is shown below with the optional keys being shown vertically and the corresponding menus being referred to in a box

Unlike the Radio, the ATC tool switches itself off automaticallyf when the request has been sent to ATC

Like the Radio, the ATC function remains ON till switched off or another menu function is activated

Flight Directions
When in flight mode the game is always under the directions of an Air Trafic Control (ATC)  to/from which instructions/directions maybe asked/received.  Whether this ATC is a land or ship based station or AEW aircraft in the vicinity is not relevant.   The ATC is always there ... unless a specific mission is designed to have it shut of for a reason or another (and no doubt there will be some of these).

In practice how does it work ?.
It very much depends on the kind of information the game wants to receive

1.

Flight directions (to ... from...)

Where do you go and Where are you coming from - the ATC reply is always based on the exact location of the gamer on the game map.  These directions may be asked repeatedly at any time.   When having refueled on a friendly airfield or carrier, the setup is the same unless the target/destination has been reached and treated

1.1

You may ask the ATC the heading toward your destination Your destination is either the target(s) assigned by the Mission Controller or when flying in free flight mode, the destination you specified in your Flight Plan.  The answer is expressed in the form of a heading :
= Your heading toward target/destination is ... referring to the reading on the compass

1.2

You may ask the ATC the heading back to your base or carrier.  When wishing to fly back to your point of take-off or when ordered to to so, the ATC will give the answer in the form of a heading based on the exact location of the gamer on the game map:
= Your heading back to base is ...

1.3

You may ask the ATC the heading toward the nearest refueling aircraft (tanker).  When available, the answer will be :
= The heading toward nearest tanker is 000 - altitude (eg) 25,000 ft

1.4

You may ask the ATC the heading toward the nearest friendly airfield and aircraft carrier.  When available, the answer will be :
= The heading toward nearest friendly airfield is 000  or when flying an carrier compatible aircraft :
= The heading toward nearest friendly aircraft carrier is 000 and 000 toward the nearest friendly airfield (starting with the nearest)

2.

Situation Awareness - Friendlies and Wingman (see also Wingman Control)

When flying in formation the gamer may ask the position of the wingman
When flying solo, the gamer may ask the position of the nearest friendly aircraft (or formation thereof)
When flying in multigamer mode, the gamer may ask the position of the nearest friendly aircraft (or formation thereof)
A friendly aircraft is an aircraft belonging to the same block (Wapa, Nato or Neco - see Identification Friend or Foe - IFF)

2.1

-

2.2

When asking ATC the wingman position, the answer will be
= The heading toward your wingman is 000 - altitude (eg) 25,000 ft - his heading is 000 speed ... kts  if any, or:  You don't have a wingman
    or...
Your wingman has been shot down :-((

2.3

When asking ATC the position of friendly aircraft, the answer will be
= The heading toward nearest friendly aircraft is 000 - altitude (eg) 25,000 ft - his headin 000, speed ...kts if any, or Sky is empty of friendlies

3.

Situation Awareness - Ennemies

The gamer may ask ATC to give a resume of what's happening/present in the close or distant environment in terms of aerial threats

3.1

When asking ATC the position of aerial foes, the answer will be a quantity, a heading and an altitude :
= There ar (nbr) Nato/Wapa/Neco (depending) aircrafts, heading 000, distance .... miles/km, flying 000 speed, at .... ft (altitude) or if close
= There ar (nbr) Nato/Wapa/Neco (depending) aircrafts at ... o'clock at ... ft (altitude) distance ... feet

3.2

When asking ATC the position of land foes, the answer will be a heading and distance
= Reported Nato/Wapa/Neco (depending) anti-aircrafts assets, heading 000, distance .... miles/km

3.3

When asking ATC the position of surface sea foes, the answer will be a heading and distance
= Reported Nato/Wapa/Neco (depending) ships, heading 000, distance .... miles/km

3.4

When asking ATC the position of ennemy radars, the answer will be a heading and distance, whether they picked you up and suggested flight path
= Nato/Wapa/Neco (depending) radar active, heading 000, distance .... miles/km - range .... miles/km - they (haven't) picked you up -
suggest you fly ... (altitude) 000 heading
(define rule of advice)
