AAC AIRCRAFT GUNS COMPARATIVE

  INTRODUCTION

MM Anthony G. Williams and Emmanuel Gustin published two interresting articles regarding aircraft guns : "Will the Fighter Gun Survive " and "Modern Fighter Gun Effectiveness".  These articles together with another one titlled "Historical Machine Gun Cartridges" form the ground on which the present Notes are based.

 
  PART 1 - AIRCRAFT GUNS COMPARISON - THE WILLIAMS & GUSTIN METHOD

While Atlantic Air Combat™ is mored intended as an improved "arcade" rather than a "simulation" game, we neverthless try to stay close to reality.  For example, should AAC incorporate an aircraft representing the Aero S-92 (post-war Czech version of the Me 262), it would then have similar peformances and be equipped with guns having similar if not identical specifications.   There are however instances where an existing aircraft is "modernized" by a fictional operator with, among other things other guns.  If these are inspired by existing guns, the same rule would apply but if the guns are fictional, then it will be ... fantasy.   As the game fiction happens during the 1960s, on-board guns still do play an important role and one must recognize that spreading bullets in the landscape, preferably on target (!), is part of the fun.  At least in a game...

At this stage, several gun choices for fantasy aircrafts (eg: the Argentinian VJ101E)  have been made using the rule of the thumb.  Then the above mentioned studies provide an interresting approach to gun efficiency and a similar approach will be used here to show how guns and aircrafts stand in comparison with each other even if we, at Atlantic Air Combat™, have a different approach to gun comparison.

The tables accompanying the above mentioned articles are complex and include factors like the installation weight to measure gun efficiency.  This particular aspect will be excluded here.   In the context of AAC, installation weight is only taken into account to ensure the feasibility of a "cheat", and that aspect is taken care of in the preliminary notes accompanying each aircraft.

In these Notes, MM Gustin and Williams' comparison rule is integrated in the non-comparison table.  The results differ slightly from their publicaton as the background data and rounding rules are not necessarily the same.  For example, their value for the .50 BMG bullet is 43 g, while AAC uses 45 g - and there is naturally no pretense that our varlue is any better.  But if end values are somewhat different, the approach is the same and the present Notes do not bring anything new in that respect.  Credit of any data contained in this first part must go exclusively to the authors of these articles, namely MM Anthony G. Williams and Emmanuel Gustin.

 

Explanatory Notes

Here is how the W&G comparison rule should be read.  The similarity of result for "Damage" and "Gun Power" in the example chosen is accidental as it so happened that the rate of fire, expressed in rps is 10 (600 rpm), the same value as the arbitrary reduction divider used in "Ammo Power", on which the "Gun Power" value is based.

Effectiveness

Shells relying on kinetic energy only are assigned a 100% effectiveness factor.  Shells with an explosive and/or incendiary content see their effectiveness increased by the weight fraction of that chemical content, times ten.

Time to 2332

The Me262 is the "reference gun fighter".  It was equipped with 4×30mm Mk108 guns firing 330 g shells @ 540 m/s and @ 600 rpm (10 rps).  Thus the propelled damage level was 583×4=2332 during the 1st second.  This value is used as a reference for comparison purposes.

  PART 2 - AAC AIRCRAFT GUNS NON-COMPARISON TABLE

The approach to gun comparison in Atlantic Air Combat™ is slightly different as we are more interrested in the number of projectiles, their mass and the amount of explosive material being released.  This somewhat different (cruder ?..) approach is not intended to trigger any polemic and interrested readers are invited to read those articles as the original is always better than an imitation.

In the table below, aircrafts are referred to by their AAC idenfication.  The information is sorted from the more to the less powerfully equipped.

Then, among a variety of ordance, aircrafts may be equipped with gun pods.  The resulting value is shown on the right, with some aircrafts IDs being repeated as they could be donned with less or more than a pair of these pods.  Then, something ressembling a Su-7 Fitter with four UPK23 lookalike pods - an obvious fantasy - comes up as the first in the class.

Finally, several aircrafts would only rely on the presence of such gun pods to have any gun power at all - these are closing the table.

All these aircrafts and aircrafts/pods combinations will not necessarily end up in the game, but this is where the draft stands at the moment of writing (Oct.'16).  This table may be corrected if containing errors but will not be updated.  Aircrafts and their armament will be defined separately the Williams/Gustin comparison methodology will not be used any further.

Notes

The Me262/Aero S92, used by MM Williams & Gusting as the "reference gunfighter".  The MC262A1 is its equivalent in AAC.

Aircraft and gun designations are those used within AAC, applying to both historically inspired or fantasy aircrafts
